JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision from the W/WW Foreman, performs repair and installation tasks for the City's water distribution and wastewater collections systems. Incumbent operates equipment for installation and construction of water/sewer lines, lift stations, mains, and manholes. Position locates problems and performs repairs for leaks, line breaks, and faulty components, and restores interrupted services. Positions performs some tasks independently, but generally functions as part of a work crew for City projects of greater complexity and dimension. Performs related work as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of the practices and materials utilized for water and wastewater distribution and collection systems repair, construction and maintenance.
- Skill in the safe and effective operation of light and medium duty equipment used in the construction, maintenance, repair and installation of water/wastewater collection and distribution systems.
- Skill in operating a variety of hand held manual, gas, or electrically powered tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Ability to issue and receive oral or written instructions.
- Ability to read, write, complete and transmit repair orders, work orders, etc.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with supervisor, fellow personnel, other departments with whom position interacts.
- Operates various types of vehicles and equipment in the repair orders, work orders, etc.

- Operates various types of vehicles and equipment in the repair and installation of water and wastewater lines, i.e., backhoes, jet machines, heavy trucks.
- Performs various repairs for distribution and collection systems of the City, i.e., leaks, main breaks, faulty valves, broken fire hydrants, manholes.
- Corrects wastewater stoppages and blockages in mains.
- Performs water connections and disconnections as directed.
- Performs various preventive maintenance duties, i.e., flushing wastewater lines, cleaning wet wells and lift stations, cleaning and maintaining vehicles, portable pumps and power equipment.
- Addresses complaints concerning high or low water pressure, discolored water, and metering.
- Installs new water and sewer services, meters, and taps, and changes out existing meters as needed.
- Installs new mains, valves, fire hydrants, manholes, etc.
- Ensures proper placement of traffic control devices, signs, and caution indicators per work site.
- Functions on call for responding to emergencies and rotates weekly on-call.
- Attends periodic safety meetings according to department policy.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION
(1) High School Diploma or GED
(2) Texas Driver's License
(3) A minimum of a Class C Water License or be eligible for "C" within 6 months. Ability to obtain a waste water license within 6 months.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays; in all weather conditions; under hazardous conditions; on congested roadways, obstructed roads, high structures; around operating equipment; with chemicals; and with the physical ability and stamina to perform strenuous physical work. Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, body fluids, chemicals, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions and intense noises. Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
Pay Dependent Upon Experience. City of Strawn offers health insurance and a retirement annuity after 90 day probation period. City pays 75% of the cost of employee health insurance. City matches employee contribution to annuity up to 6%. This position is eligible for overtime and will likely require overtime.

City of Strawn seeking public works employee 1/18/2018
City of Strawn is seeking a public works employee. No experience necessary. We will train. Employee must be able to pass a drug screen and be able to lift 50 lbs. Employee must posess a valid Texas Driver's License or be able to attain one immidiately upon hire. Employee must have or be able to attain a class D water license within 90 days of employment with the city. City of Strawn will pay for all necssary schools. The employee will be required to help with all duties of the public works department including street maintenance, water system maintenance, water treatment plant maintenance, sewer system maintenance and park maintenance. Pay will start at $12.50 an hour and will increase as employee becomes proficient and attains necessary licenses. This job is eligible for health insurance and retirement plan after 90 day probationary period. One week paid vacation after year one, two weeks paid vacation from years two through five, three weeks paid vacation thereafter.
